That’s exactly what they do for gatorade and powerade. It helps because of the energy you get from the sugar but wears off quickly and can even make you sluggish and tired faster than usual.

I don’t see how it could be harmful, and it might give you a slight boost in energy for a brief amount of time, but i don’t really see how beneficial it could possibly be, except in your mind–if you believe it will work, then it probably will help you in some small way. However it is not a good idea to drink too much salt water, as it can throw your electrolytes into imbalance & cause you all kinds of physical problems, including renal (kidney) damage, if you do this frequently for a long period of time. Sugar won’t be harmful to you, (it’s not really poison, you ,know. that’s just what health freaks call it!) It is a perfectly harmless substance, occurs naturally & is essential to the human body for continued health. Of course it will cause weight gain if taken too much, but what isn’t harmful in excess?

Well, I don’t understand, are you mixing the sugar and salt in yourself? Sounds like that wouldn’t be tasty. I assume your asking about Gatorade and why sugar and salt would be in there.
The answer is no, it is not unhealthy. In fact, it is in there because your body needs them and needs them together. Here is why to the best of my ability: You cells have gateways to them called symporters that allow the movement of ions back and forth across their membrane. Now, they don’t allow just anything through, and to ensure this they have mechanisms. One of them is that they sometimes won’t allow one ion through unless a second one is present. Glucose, or sugar, cannot pass into a cell unless NaCl, or salt, is present. So together they bind into the symporter, changing the shape of it, opening the door, and effectively allowing glucose into where it is needed. By having electrolytes, or salt, freely available you make the transport of glucose much more effective, and thus your workout much more effective, because your muscles are being supplied with energy.
Without salt glucose has less to bind to, the symporter action is less optimal, and so your going to fatigue sooner. But, this action is more necessary during high energy burning periods. So you don’t need to drink Gatorade all the time, everything will keep it itself pretty well balanced by itself.
