@ThatDifferentGuy: I say yes to the apples — as long as they are available! When they’re not, or when they not feasible, use the more field expedient packets of coffee. Thanks for sharing that bit of knowledge, however — I didn’t know that! I say use BOTH in their appropriate settings. Many blessings, brother –GM

An apple is actually more effective at keeping you awake then a large cup of coffee. Due to the natural sugars your body is an expert at breaking down and utilizing unlike refine sugars or even high fructose corn syrup which supresses the immune system. Eat the skins of fruit they carry powerful antioxidants which prevent the fruit from being oxidized from the suns UV rays.

Your wife (?) mentioned Tang during the taste testing. I have stocked up on several large containers of Tang available at Sam’s Club. Not for a bug out bag, but for a long term storage drink. It has some extra vitamins (including C) and would make filtered water taste better. We have powdered ice tea and lemonade in the bulk sizes (from Sam’s Club), too.

@StormRider308: Good thinking — I missed the Starbucks VIA sample pack give-aways only because I remained too skeptical at first. Just goes to show — strike when the opportunity is at hand! Many blessings, brother! –GM

Excellent as always. I overpack beverages in my BOB: one only has to look at history to see how people can get by on cups of coffee or tea when food is scarce.
I’ve always prefered tea to coffe when I’m living out of a ruck…while most instant coffees and stuff have always been either terrible or too expensive, tea is tea as long as you have hot water. That new starbucks instant coffee is the shit though, I freeloaded a whole pile of sample packs of it when they were first giving it away.

@trailtreeisland: Excellent suggestion! I can clearly see where ‘Base Camp’ situations might require a larger sized items to accommodate more folks. Many blessings –GM

@rangerdanger222: Excellent! Also, another brand to consider–which I carry in my Medical Trauma Bag–is Jianas Brothers ‘Oral Rehydration Salts.’ It’s actually for more severe cases of dehydration, but worth mentioning for the consideration of some. Many blessings –GM

The FD I work for carries sqwicher on the units. We generally only break it open after big events in hot weather, but it comes to us premixed to dump into a 5 gal beverage cooler. A little different than a bug out, but might be worth a look for a base camp or for a bug in when there’s no A/C and you expect family to rely on your place because you are the only one who saw the SHTF comming…

One electrolyte replacement option that may be more size and weight efficient than the drink powders is salt tabs. There are many brands available but SaltStick springs to mind. You can also break the capsules and dump the contents into a water bottle or beverage.
